Things You should know about Spyware Software
Spyware sneaks unnoticed onto an unwitting user's computer, sometimes hitching a ride with a program the user requested, sometimes more insidiously installing itself automatically from a seemingly innocent web page. Old fashioned viruses were bad enough, disrupting the orderly functioning of the computer or even corrupting or deleting files, but the new spyware is smarter than that. It hides in the background, slowing the computer down a little but otherwise trying to avoid notice until the unsuspecting user types in a password, bank account number, or other personal information. Then the spyware springs into action, recording and transmitting this sensitive information to criminals or even redirecting the web browser to a counterfeit web page to continue the identity theft.
If the hapless user's first clue to the identity theft is a mysteriously dwindling bank account balance, denial for a loan or credit card, or bill collectors (or even police!) knocking on the door, it can be quite a shock! Instead, savvy users install the next generation of protection, known as anti-spyware software. However, not all anti-spyware protection is created equal! The following software packages are low cost or even free and have received top ratings in reviews from web sites and magazines such as TopTenReviews, PCMag, ConsumerSearch, and PCWorld.
Top ratings from both PCWorld and TopTenReviews went to Webroot Software's Spy Sweeper and Sunbelt Software's CounterSpy. These programs cleaned and prevented almost all of the malicious programs tested against. Both are priced at around $20, making either of them an inexpensive insurance policy for personal information. CounterSpy was slightly more effective, according to PCWorld.
Even more affordable are several free offerings. LavaSoft's Ad-Aware was almost as effective as the top contenders, but offers a free edition for personal use. Similarly effective and also free is Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, a newer but very well-respected offering. Also free are AVG Antivirus and avast! Antivirus, both of which garnered high praise from PCMag. The most recent version of these popular free virus scanners include anti-spyware and safe browsing technology which effectively prevent infection. To round out the free offerings, Safer Networking's Spybot Search and Destroy was almost as effective as Ad-Aware, but also includes real-time protection against new infections. And finally, a program called HijackThis, while not a preventive scanner, is an indispensable cleanup tool to assist in removing any malware that managed to get around the scanners and weasel its way onto the system.
ConsumerSearch rated Norton Internet Security highly, but the other reviewers didn't mention it. That's possibly because of its rather steep $70 price tag! However, the Norton suite includes a number of features not offered by the others, including antivirus protection, a firewall, spam filters and parental controls, so it might be worth the extra price if those features are needed.
Mixed reviews go to STOPZilla, which was the number 3 package according to TopTenReviews. PCMag was less impressed, indicating that while it worked, the extra features that supposedly set it apart from the less expensive competitors weren't worth the extra price.
Faring poorly in the reviews were McAfee's AntiSpyware, Allume Systems' Internet Cleanup, GarbageClean, and NovaShield AntiMalware.
