Free Online Virus Scan

Looking for an easy solution to virus scanning that does not cost a dime? Try online virus scanners instead of pricey software before you buy it. We do recommend every computer have anti-virus security and protection with a robust scanning utility, but if your goal is a gaming computer with low overhead, or another high performance CPU intensive application, you may want to consider using online scanners to maintain certain level of protection through a manual scan every week or so and just reformat, zap your hard drive every month or so if something goes wrong. If this is your goal, while not recommended, here is what we have found to be the most effective.

1. Trend Micro HouseCall – This is a free online virus scanner offered by Trend Micro, which checks whether a computer has been infected by viruses, spyware, or other malware. I like this very much when it works, which it doesn't’t always with all versions of firefox. You may have to mess around a bit, and use the java applet rather than the other method.

Kaspersky Open Space Security

2. Kaspersky Lab - The Kaspersky free online virus scanner is a great way to find out if you have any viruses or spyware on your machine without having to install new software. We are actually really impressed with this tool, so much so that we just bumped it up to a number 2 rank taking over the number 2 ratings spot from bitdefender. There is a nice little feature that allows a user to just scan critical areas rather than the whole system. Not to mention that for a web application, it feels better than some of the full virus scan utility's that ship with some of the lesser antivirus software suite solutions. Also very helpful is that suspicious objects classification for file so that you can see for yourself before the program automatically deletes a file.

BitDefender Total Security 2009

3. Bit Defender Online Scanner is a free on-demand virus scanner which incorporates the award-winning Bit Defender scanning engines. Because the full version of Bit defender anti virus is so good, we have ranked the it high. That is if you can get it to work. It doesn't support Firefox (WoW!) and it doesn't work with our version of IE8. There is actually a security warning that pops up and says "this website is not authorized to use this tool" yet it is a sub domain of the main Bit Defender domain.
